WILL
WILL Belle de Will, original illustration made in 1982. Signed. Acrylic and India ink on paper 33.8 × 41.9 cm (13.31 × 16.5 in.) This beautiful illustration by Maltaite (Will's real name: Willy Maltaite) is typical of his style and influences. A student of Joseph Gillain (Jijé), Will inherited from his master a pictorial approach directly influenced by the frank colors of the Fauvist period of Matisse or Kees Van Dongen, or of the so-called "School of Paris" with painters such as Raoul Dufy, whose line he took over, or Amadeo Modigliani, whose somewhat hieratic portrait pose he retained. But other contemporary and more personal influences also emerge: the graphic ardor of the English draftsman Ronald Searle and the permanence of a model that is often found in his drawings: his wife Claude, here in a "Mona Lisa" attitude, recognizable by her prominent cheekbones and her famous doe eyes. What to say, emblematic. Always black with bamboo dipped in Indian ink. Eric Maltaite
