WILLIAM VANCE XIII Where the Indian goes (T.2), Dargaud 1985 Original plate n° 22, prepublished in the Journal de Spirou n° 2463 of June 25, 1985. Signed. India ink on paper 43.9 × 59.2 cm (17.28 × 23.31 in.) This plate is a key episode in the history of XIII. He was mistaken for Jake Sheldon, Captain Steve Rowland's alias, after he committed the assassination of the President of the United States. It is in this page that XIII finds a lead, on the back of a small photo. Will it reveal his true identity? For the hero with the gray temple, the adventure begins. With his "ripped" inking, Vance wonderfully manages to draw beautiful women (here, Felicity, who has no effect on the amnesiac) but not only: the interior decoration, the detail of the clothes, the marsh landscape in the middle of winter, we feel the know-how of a draftsman who could draw everything. Each square is a small painting, where the line vibrates in a fascinating and magical way.
