PHILIPPE JARBINET AIRBORNE 44 If we must survive (T.5), Casterman 2014 Original plate n°9. Signed. Watercolor and India ink on paper 36 × 48 cm (14.17 × 18.9 in.) This plate allowed me to mix two elements that I like to draw: snow and airplanes. It shows a P-51 Mustang being chased by a Focke-Wulf 190 over the roof of the Saint-Pierre church in Bastogne in December 1944. This place of worship, transformed into a hospital, occupies a central place in episode n° 6 of the Band of Brothers series. The Mustang with the yellow and red checkered nose belongs to the 363d Fighter Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group which, a few months later, will help the American army to conquer the west of Germany. The English ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary), to which Tessa belongs, ensured the transport of new aircraft between the factories and the active military airfields. The women were part of it as well as the men. Since the planes were unarmed, they were easy targets for the German fighters. This explains the course of this scene during which Tessa goes to seek, on the ground, the support of the fire which misses to her. Philippe Jarbinet
