JEAN-CLAUDE FOURNIER SPIROU AND FANTASIO The rigged abbey (T.22), Dupuis 1972 Original plate n° 02, prepublished in the Journal de Spirou n° 1743 of September 9, 1971. Signed. India ink on paper 32.7 × 42 cm (12.87 × 16.54 in.) "I present myself: Charles Atan!" "So what! Having a silly name doesn't give you the right to enter people's homes to commit depredations!" The tone is set. We are in the register of the big joke. Jean-Claude Fournier's idea is to introduce at the beginning of the episode two scoundrels as stupid as they are mean, trying to convince Spirou, Fantasio and Itoh Kata to join their criminal organization. It's a waste of time, as you can guess. No question of splitting hairs (although with Renaldo at the foil, we can expect the worst), it doesn't matter to us that the "son of the sky" comes from the Empire of the Rising Sun or that the "young samurai" is in fact a fine fencer's fly. For this second plate of The rigged Abbey, the action must imperatively take precedence over the documentation "Zzoef! Tssst, Tssst!"
