PATRICE PELLERIN THE SPHERRY Original illustration made in 2021. Signed. Gouache and acrylic inks on paper 58 × 39.6 cm (22.83 × 15.59 in.) In the eighteenth century, roads were poor and unsafe. Goods were transported to the cities mainly by boat up the rivers and rias of Brittany. Patrice Pellerin shows us here the canal of the Elorn, which connects the roadstead of Brest to the city of Landerneau. Note that the towpath along which the Sparrowhawk travels is strewn with old cannons sunk into the ground, which serve as mooring bollards. The starting point for this illustration was the desire to draw a new type of boat. In this case, a longboat, much smaller and simpler than the frigate of L'Épervier. And, by making it sail in the canal of L'Élorn, it was the opportunity to show a different environment. A navy where the land is even more present than the water. P.P.
