PATRICE PELLERIN THE SPRINGER Captives on board (T.4), Dupuis 1999 Original plate n°38 prepublished in Le Journal de Spirou n°3207 of September 29, 1999. Signed. India ink on paper 35.6 × 47 cm (14.02 × 18.5 in.) In the first cycle of L'Épervier, Yann de Kermeur has his ship La Méduse stolen in the port of Brest by the two accomplices Villeneuve and La Motte, who are on their way to Guyana in search of treasure. An epic chase across the Atlantic ensues. This panel describes the departure from the Canary Islands, as well as life on board in spaces so cramped that it is impossible to stand. I pride myself on having always been in the places where my stories take place, but that is not the case here. I have never been to the Canary Islands. So I used as documentation the drawings of Pierre Ozanne from Brest, who crossed the Atlantic in 1771-1772 on La Flore and made remarkably precise washes of the various ports where he anchored. P.P.
