BATEM MARSUPILAMI Mars The Black (T.3), Marsu Productions 1989 Original plate n°13. Signed. India ink on paper 35,7 x 46,7 cm (14,06 x 18,39 in.) If the melon borrowed from his beloved master makes him look like a Clockwork Orange, the way Mars walks - back of his hands on the ground, like a gorilla - reveals his dejection. He is an orphan of Noah, his kind trainer from the Zabaglione circus, and of civilization. Lost in a virgin forest of which he ignores the codes, he rushes on poisonous fruits with explicit signs " Seeing a character vomit is really rare, in comics. I'm a rather reserved person, so I thought we would play the episode more discreetly. In my pencil sketch, I presented Mars from behind. But when I showed the drawing to Franquin, he said, "Let's go!" and I felt that he was loosening up. The result goes very well! I started this album in Franquin's property in Callian. We had our drawing tables side by side. I came down there with my wife, children, dog and Yann's cutting. His scenario is excellent, because the Marsupilami is omnipresent.
