BILAL
ENKI BILAL Hunting party, Dargaud 1983 Original plate n°55, prepublished in Pilote mensuel n°103 of December 1982. Signed India ink and acrylic on paper 35.6 × 46.5 cm (14.02 × 18.31 in.) With Pierre Christin, Enki Bilal had started for the first time in France a cycle of albums with a truly political content: Légendes d'aujourd'hui. The name of the Ukrainian city of Odessa, which appears in the third panel of this plate, is a reminder of its topicality. In this album, Tadeusz Boczek, a communist apparatchik who had escaped from the Warsaw ghetto, had understood before many others the face that would be taken by a sovietized Poland. He was nonetheless one of the victims of the regime. In 1967, he was excluded from the party apparatus: "The regime needed a scapegoat to justify its failures. Who did they think of, I ask you? To the few Jews who had been forgotten by a meticulous German genocide. In 1967, indeed, the last anti-Semitic campaign by a modern state against its Jews took place. This is what Christin alludes to - for the first time in a comic book - in this rare and magnificent direct color plate where, in the fourth panel, the very Stalinist architecture of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw is enthroned.
