JEAN-CLAUDE FOREST BARBARELLA (T.1), Le Terrain Vague 1964 Original plate n°12, prepublished in V magazine in 1962 Indian ink and coloured ink on paper 31.6 x 45.8 cm (12.44 x 18.03 in.) Barbarella, with her long hair and ingenuous air borrowed from Brigitte Bardot, is the first openly sexy SF heroine in French comics. The series was published in eight episodes starting in April 1962 in V Magazine. In this remarkably swirling plate, the bluish tints are indications to the colorists to lay the two-color process of the album published in 1964. This was the moment when censorship fell upon her, the first skirmish in a fight to impose adult comics in France. Finding her way alone to the planet Lythion, which she hopes will be welcoming, Barbarella meets mostly androids and monsters, but also some attractive young men. Adapted for the cinema by Roger Vadim and Dino de Laurentiis in 1968, played by Jane Fonda, Barbarella becomes an icon celebrated by Gainsbourg and Duran Duran alike.
