Here appears one of the other great female figures in the Mattéo series: Aneshka, a former Polish Olympic champion. She is a fighter, a real one, a radical revolutionary markswoman and even, coming from an ultracatholic country, an anticlerical one. Between her and Amélie, there is a hint of rivalry, but their detestation of the Phalangists unites them. In this key scene, Aneshka teaches Amélie to handle a rifle. During this exercise, she nearly shoots her lover Mermoza, who has escaped and is by chance at the end of her rifle. Tragedy in Gibrat is always tinged with irony.
"Snow tends to embellish everything, that is to say if it is easy on the eyes, it softens the landscapes, the noises, it makes us children Does it keep the same virtues in times of war? Not so sure. You shouldn't ask too much of it. "J-P G.
