JEAN-PIERRE GIBRAT THE FLIGHT OF THE BIRD, Dupuis On the terrace, original illustration made in 2021. Signed. Acrylic inks and watercolour on paper 70 × 53 cm (27.56 × 20.87 in.) In Le Vol du Corbeau (The Flight of the Raven), a title that alludes to the Chant des partisans, Jean-Pierre Gibrat returns to the time of the Occupation. But no longer in a small village in the Aveyron, as in Le Sursis, but in Paris, where the artist makes the scenery sparkle in spite of the green-grey wave that is sweeping over it. At the center of the plot, a couple. And a young woman: Jeanne, a resistance fighter, recognizable by her vermilion red headdress. In this scene, Gibrat describes the Parisian microcosm under the German boot. One can linger on each physiognomy and imagine its history. Collabo, Resistance fighter, resigned, hunted clandestine? It is a human comedy that unfolds before our eyes. Only Jeanne notices us, the spectators, and questions us with her beautiful eyes. "There is undoubtedly a bit of nostalgia in this drawing... Of course, it's not that we regret the Germans, but, in these times of confinement, we feel a little peevish when we see a sunny café terrace on the Grands Boulevards, but we are never happy. " J-P G.
