CUZOR STEVE CUZOR HENRY FLEMING'S BATTLE Dupuis 2024 Original plate no. 103. Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper 48 × 62 cm (18.9 × 24.41 in.) In this large-scale combat panel, one of the most beautiful in the album, violence explodes in every frame. In the midst of all the smoke and commotion, Henry is but a shadow. Only his bandage stands out, having replaced his soldier's cap. To his superiors and comrades, this bandage is a "red badge": Henry was almost shot through it. But he knows it's a lie, and wears it on his forehead! So far in the story, Henry has always escaped without too much violence. What was important to me in this sequence was that he was really suffering. The last three squares, on a black background, had to leave no room for ambiguity. The first three, on a light background at the top of the page, lead up to and justify the explosions. S.C.
