SCHUITEN
FRANÇOIS SCHUITEN 12 la douce, Casterman 2012 Original plate n° 19. Signed. India ink on paper 44.4 × 60.8 cm (17.48 × 23.94 in.) Based on a mythical train produced in only six copies, the Type 12 SNCB Atlantic of 1939, twelve meters long, one of the last steam trains in Belgium, François Schuiten has built a story of a mechanic who, close to retirement, does not want to see the machine decommissioned because of its poor performance and the advent of electric railways. Léon Van Bel will therefore try to take it away from the scrap merchants. With his line inherited from the illustrators of Jules Verne, François Schuiten succeeds in making "la Douce", an imposing steel machine with a proud and dark silhouette, endearing. In this sumptuous plate, Schuiten describes to perfection the attachment of the old man to his machine. Schuiten has donated a large number of his plates to public institutions (King Baudoin Foundation, BnF), so they are becoming increasingly rare on the market.
