JEAN GIRAUD BLUEBERRY Blueberry's, Stardom 1997 Original cover. Signed. India ink and colored inks on paper 32.3 × 25.2 cm (12.72 × 9.92 in.) Jean Giraud's Blueberry has undergone many metamorphoses over the course of his career. At first, his drawing was in the tradition of Joseph Gillain, alias Jijé, who became his mentor of sorts. Jijé himself, endowed with a solid artistic training, painter and graphic designer, looked closely at American cartoonists like Milton Caniff, Fred Harmann or Lyman Young. Blueberry is then a mark of the young Belmondo. But over time, as Giraud became aware of the modern stakes of a comic strip, as well as its political significance, he would make him a more virile cowboy, with a few days' beard. Later still, it is his alter ego Moebius for whom he uses an "automatic drawing", which inflects the drawing. We are here in this period. It is a series of portraits of Blueberry made for the Stardom label, a sort of family publishing structure. The drawing is free, as much from the point of view of the line as that of the totally surrealist colors.
