JUILLARD
ANDRÉ JUILLARD The Blue Notebook, Casterman 1994 Original plate n° 36, pre-published in (À suivre) n° 192 of January 1994. Signed. India ink and colored inks on paper 29.9 × 39.9 cm (11.77 × 15.71 in.) Le Cahier bleu is undoubtedly one of the most successful albums of Juillard's career. No doubt because it allows its author to remove the label of "cartoonist of history" which sticks to him, following the successful publication of 7 Lives of the Hawk at Glénat, the great publisher of historical comics at the time. It is also the first one where he appears as a "complete author". It must be said that his description of the Parisian artistic life, all in delicate colors and careful line, is absolutely stunning. The album, published by Casterman, appeared in the very hype magazine (À suivre) and won the following year the Alph'art for best album at the Angoulême Festival. For this sequence, I bought myself a ticket for a concert at the Châtelet. It's fun to do location scouting for a fully written script: I knew exactly what I needed. I liked to recreate the Parisian night and its lights. André Juillard
