YVES SWOLFS LONESOME The Preacher's Trail (T.1), Le Lombard 2018 Original cover. Signed. Oil on paper 40.8 × 57.4 cm (16.06 × 22.6 in.) A graduate of the Saint-Luc Institute in Brussels - at the same time as François Schuiten, Benoît Sokal, Andreas, Philippe Berthet, Frédéric Bézian or Philippe Francq, all skilled image technicians - Yves Swolfs admits to being completely self-taught in painting. To learn the rudiments, he was inspired by the great American painters and illustrators who drew the West, such as Charles M. Russell or Frank McCarthy. Their nostalgic yet classic approach fits perfectly with the baroque realism of the spaghetti western. Extremely strong, the first covers of Durango are a sensation. So when Swolfs returned to the Western with the Lonesome series, he applied the same procedures as in his early days, but with more experience and maturity: a hieratic character, in front, with an intense gaze, but this time oblique, ready to shoot at point-blank range. The effect is impressive.
