BATEM MARSUPILAMI Mars the black (T.3), Marsu Productions 1989 Original plate n°24. Signed. India ink on paper 35.6 × 46.7 cm (14.02 × 18.39 in.) A quick succession of small squares, to stage the tribulations of a Mars who, decidedly, doesn't understand much about the green hell. The fruits were brought to him by Bip and Sarah, wild children of the forest who know this environment. "When I drew this black jaguar that Mars mistook for Angela, the "Black Panther" of the Zabaglione circus, I was drawing a black feline for the first time. I gave him more powerful legs and sharper claws than his ocellated brother. It is said that this rare pigmentation is accompanied by a more aggressive character in the animals that have it. Hence the behavior of this jaguar, and perhaps also that of Bobo, the little black Marsupilami. In any case, drawing black without putting reflections on it is suicidal. I had prepared the spaces and given instructions to the colorist.
