BATEM
BATEM MARSUPILAMI Mars the black (T.3), Marsu Productions 1989 Original plate n°5. Signed. India ink on paper 35.7 × 46.9 cm (14.06 × 18.46 in.) A "tiny perimeter of peace", as the text says? This well-balanced plate allows us to meet again with Tignass, the bird we met in Le Bébé du bout du monde. Batem says: "Franquin asked me, 'What would you think of a little bird that would be the link between the Marsupilami and the other characters?' The Tignass was born like that, with its incredible tail feather, its floppy ears, its mane." Referring to the tracked machine in the last strip, the cartoonist notes, "I don't like to represent machines. It's not my specialty. I'm more comfortable with fauna and flora. But I start from the principle that you have to know how to execute everything!" Here the rendering is remarkable - as is the suspense of the last box, inspired by the old serials of the Illustrated, where the key to the mystery was postponed until next week. Luc Batem was noticed at a very young age by André Franquin to ensure the continuation of the adventures of the famous Marsupilami. In addition to being spotted, he was chosen, adored and validated thanks to an exceptional intuition of the "master", who was never disappointed, even post-mortem, by his spiritual son. I find in him the same qualities that made Franquin a great author: the talent, the generosity and the humanism he had towards his public. Each time I had the opportunity to meet Luc during the Festival, he was always the last one to sign until noon, and always with splendid dedications. Not to mention his taste for perfection of detail, of movement, in short, of the requirement of the perfect accomplished drawing. This spirit of sharing makes Luc the legitimate depositary of the Franquin spirit. Serge Ernst
