JEAN-PIERRE GIBRAT The Flight of the Raven, Dupuis Gare d'Austerlitz, original illustration made in 2015. Signed. Acrylic inks and watercolor on paper 41.5 × 54 cm (16.34 × 21.26 in.) All the narrative in this drawing lies in the vanishing lines. They converge from the luggage in the foreground, symbols of departure, then from the ceiling of the wagon, punctuated by lamps, to the steel beams of the vault of the Gare d'Austerlitz, towards the almost hidden central point of a German officer whose presence adds, to the uncertainty of departure, the imminence of a threat. This process allows the different aspects of the scene to be layered. Here is an image that tells. Another line of force, the looks: carefree for one, resigned for the other, indifferent, nostalgic They are illuminated by a light that comes from the glass roof of the station. A light that sculpts the models and falls on the various details of the scene: the headdresses, the coats, the scarves, the fittings of the luggage, the subdued closing of the windows, all in a sublime variation of ochres, browns and reds, the chromatic trademark of Cécile's velvet beret. Only great artists reach this level of perfection. I remember this drawing still in black and white, and, in its final version, I realize how much color and light bring the scene to life... Around 94% according to the police and as much according to the demonstrators... Jean-Pierre Gibrat
