JOUBERT
PIERRE JOUBERT Promise vigil, original illustration published as a poster by the Carrick company for the Scouts of Europe at the end of the 1980s. Signed. Gouache on paper 49.8 x 62.4 cm (19.61 x 24.57 in.) The Promise Vigil is an ancient Scouting rite of passage, a passage from mundane adolescence to modern-day chivalry. In this illustration, Joubert uses all the codes of Scout imagery and its link to chivalry. Everything is symbolic: in the ruins of a church, which remind us that the knights protected the Church, the young Scout on his knees receives the knighthood of the archangel Saint Michael, on whom a Roman soldier is leaning. This is Saint Martin, who gave his cloak to a poor man. He is, with Saint Michael, the patron saint of France. Jean-François Vivier
