WILLIAM VANCE XIII Trap and feelings, CBBD Belgian Post 2004 Major Jones, original illustration, made for the limited edition of the album. Signed. Graphite on paper 25.2 × 36.5 cm (9.92 × 14.37 in.) Imposed on XIII by General Carrington, Jones is his protective angel, ready to pounce whenever he is threatened, which happens more than once in each album. Inspired by the singer Whitney Houston, this overeducated and overtrained fighter pilot is an ideal bodyguard for XIII. He tells himself that he has a bit of a crush on her and that she wouldn't be indifferent. With his usual brio and his nervous line that expresses itself wonderfully under the pencil, William Vance draws up his portrait here: sexy, enticing, fatal, but above all lethal. Jones is the typical example of the influence of a drawing on the writer. In the scenario of the 2nd volume of XIII, Where the Indian Goes, Lieutenant Jones had only a small role to play, quite badly defined by the way. But when I saw the way Vance had created her, I immediately understood that she had to be given a real role. That changed the whole series. Jean Van Hamme
