JEAN-PIERRE GIBRAT MATTÉO, Futuropolis En bandoulière, original illustration made in 2020. Signed. Acrylic inks and watercolour on paper 40.3 × 56.5 cm (15.87 × 22.24 in.) Another magnificent achievement in the series of portraits of Amélie, the heroine of the Mattéo series, shown here in a haughty pose, rifle slung over her shoulder, climbing the mountains surrounding the camp. Notice how the composition starts from a dark ground, emerging from the night, to offer itself to the newborn sun which gives the rocks all their mineral dimension. Amélie, with a defiant pout, looks at the viewer with a small air of triumph. Regis Debray, comparing Fidel Castro to Che Guevara, distinguished between the revolutionary pragmatism of the former and the idealism tinged with romanticism of the latter. The former was a doctor of law, the latter of medicine. The former was a politician, the latter a kind of martyr dedicated to sacrifice. Amélie is a nurse and she is clearly on the side of the ideal. "In fact, this drawing was initially planned for the cover of Mattéo's volume 5, but then winter caught up with us, the snow too, and this drawing was not retained. However, it is perhaps more representative of the image that we have of the Republican militia women, and we associate Spain more with the sun than with the snow. In fact, the cover should be changed according to the seasons. "J-P G.
