JEAN-PIERRE GIBRAT MATTÉO Cinquième époque (T.5), Futuropolis 2019 Original cover of the first edition. Signed. Acrylic inks and watercolour on paper 38.1 × 28.8 cm (15 × 11.34 in.) Amélie is undoubtedly the central figure of Mattéo's fifth period. Gibrat shows her here at the end of the summer of 1938, when things start to go really wrong for the Republicans. But for now, they are enjoying a break in the shade on the edge of a wheat field. The image, once again, is structured by tree trunks. Amélie takes a break in the center of the image facing a Jean-Pierre Gibrat who, like Frank Capa, would pass by to do his reportage in the ranks of the Republicans in the countryside. The soldier in the foreground and those in the background look more like they were taken on the spot. This is the strength of the draughtsman or painter compared to the photographer: his ability to arrange several scenes, attitudes, or very different looks to develop a narrative in a subtle intertwining of text and image. "There is not only the male clothing to increase the femininity, an attitude of tomboy seeming to sulk the seduction militates for it... it always depends on the girl but we already spoke about it. "J-P G.
