JEAN-PIERRE GIBRAT MATTÉO Cinquième époque (T.5), Futuropolis 2019 Original illustration for the bookplate of the first edition. Signed. Acrylic inks and watercolour on paper 36.6 × 44.1 cm (14.41 × 17.36 in.) A variation on the portrait of Amélie with a gun, the central heroine of the Mattéo series. Women are at the heart of most of Gibrat's stories, and particularly in this episode. They are more than beautiful, they are voluntary, independent, tacticians, in a word: incarnate. War is no longer just a matter of men, which is the minimum in an anarchist movement. And if the hierarchy is shaken up, so is the plot, because military or political combat is spiced up with feelings, which are often missing in war stories. The result is a freshness and a renewal of point of view that is particularly welcome. Built on browns spiked with red, the blues nimbue the image, echoing that of the eyes (dreamy? disillusioned?) of the young woman. "A girl disguised as a boy, it increases her feminine side, there's nothing we can do about it! You'll tell me it depends on the girl, I'll tell you it's not wrong, but there, honestly, we can't say the opposite! If I were you, I would hesitate to say the opposite, she's putting a bullet in the barrel! "J-P G.
